Pick up your rental car in Washington DC and enjoy the city's famous monuments - the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, Washington Monument, and Vietnam Veterans and WWII Memorials. Explore the Smithsonian's many museums, and consider taking in a performance at the Kennedy Center or Ford's Theater. Head west to the Shenandoah Valley and through rolling countryside to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Next, on to Charlottesville, an area Thomas Jefferson called the "Eden of the country." Visit his mountaintop Monticello home in Albemarle County, described as one of the country's foremost architectural masterpieces. Continue east to Williamsburg with a stop in Richmond, the "Capital of the Confederacy." Experience Colonial Williamsburg, the most extensively restored 18th-century town in the US; Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the New World; and Yorktown, where General Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
