Highlights of Italy & Greece
Day 1 - Depart USA Overnight transatlantic flight to Rome.
Day 2 - Arrive Rome (2 nights) Greetings from your Trafalgar Tour Director as you are met at Rome's Fiumicino airport and transferred to your hotel. The balance of the day is at leisure — meet up with your Tour Director and fellow travellers later and decide if you would like to visit 'Rome by night'!
Day 3 - Rome sightseeing and at leisure Sightseeing with a local guide today shows us the main highlights of the Eternal City. We start in Vatican City where we visit St. Peter's Basilica where Michelangelo designed the dome, as well as the moving statue of the 'Pietŕ'. Then we cross the Tiber into Ancient Rome where we see the Colosseum, Forum and Piazza Venezia. Later you have free time to perhaps visit the Sistine Chapel and the Catacombs. This evening why not try out some delicious cuisine a local trattoria" (Buffet Breakfast)
Day 4 - Rome — Bay of Naples (2 nights) We travel south today and into the fertile region which the Romans named 'Campania Felix' and where we stop at the Commonwealth Cemetery lying beneath the Abbey of Monte Cassino, to pay our respects to those soldiers who died in the bloody battle of World War ll. We continue to Naples, lying in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius and we will have the chance of visiting the excavations at Pompeii, the town engulfed by the eruption of the volcano in AD 79 and preserved for us today. Finally we arrive at our hotel in the Bay of Naples. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 5 - Bay of Naples — Excursion to Capri This morning, we drive to the nearby resort of Sorrento for an orientation and after an included visit to an inlaid wood workshop — one of the local crafts of the area, we take minibuses down to the Marina to board our ferry to Capri. We cruise across the azure waters of the Bay of Naples and arrive in 'Marina Piccola'. A funicular ride takes you up to Capri town where you will have time to explore the chic boutiques and perhaps join the jet set on the Piazzetta. Then you'll have free time to do as you please — perhaps join a trip to Anacapri to visit Axel Munthe's beautiful house or simply while away the time at a sidewalk café. Later we return to our hotel for dinner. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 6 - Bay of Naples — Bari — At Sea We drive past Salerno and Potenza across Italy to Bari where orientation shows us the old port and Castle. We embark this evening for our overnight ferry to Greece. (buffet Breakfast)
Day 7 - At sea — Patras — Olympia We cross the Ionian Sea, arriving in the Greek port of Patras. We disembark and continue our journey by coach to Olympia for dinner and overnight stay. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 8 - Olympia sightseeing — Delphi Today we will visit the world's oldest Olympic stadium, where the first Olympic games took place in 776 BC, plus the Temples of Zeus and Hera on our visit of this Archaeological site. Later we make our way back to Patras for a ferry to mainland Greece. Then it's a pretty drive to Delphi for dinner and overnight stay. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 9 - Delphi sightseeing — Athens (2 nights) This morning after breakfast, perhaps consult the famous Oracle and predict the future! Then walk the Sacred Way to the Sanctuary of Apollo and visit this ancient Archaeological site. From here we continue our journey past Thebes, birthplace of Oedipus and on to Athens for our two-night stay. (Buffet Breakfast)
Day 10 - Athens sightseeing and at leisure Our morning sightseeing tour includes the Acropolis and Parthenon. We also visit the Acropolis Museum and view the Agora where Socrates taught. We also see the Royal Palace, Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, before heading to the stadium built for the first modern Olympic games in 1896. The rest of your day is free. Perhaps this evening enjoy an excursion to Cape Sounion and feast on Mediterranean dishes in an atmospheric setting. (Buffet Breakfast)
Day 11 - Athens - USA We are transferred to the airport for our flights home. (Buffet Breakfast)
